Hello everyone,

Based on another thread I had developed it was suggested that I look into upgrade a few more parts than my original plan. Originally I had issues with a few blue screens and overall poor performance and I had planned on upgrading the GPU and Memory. After a bit of research and feedback from the community here, I am now planning on upgrading the GPU, Memory, CPU, Power Supply and MOBO. I was hoping to get some confirmation/input on a parts list I have put together and plan to order in the coming days. My main uses are Photoshop, Illustrator, Solidworks, occasional video editing and everyday web use.

Current Build:

ASUS M5A97 AM3+ AMD Motherboard

12GB G.Skill Ripjaws DDR3 1333 Memory

Cooler Master Silent Pro 600W PSU

AMD FX-4100 Zambezi Quad Core 3.6GHz AM3+ CPU

1 EVGA GeForce GTX 550Ti 1GB 192bit GDDR5 GPU

Windows 7

Proposed Parts List:

MOBO: ASUS Z97-A LGA 1150 Intel ATX - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813132118&cm_re=z97-a_asus-_-13-132-118-_-Product

CPU: Intel Core i5 4690K Devil's Canyon Quad Core - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819117372&cm_re=4690k-_-19-117-372-_-Product

Memory - 16Gb G.Skill Ripjaws DDR3 1333 Memory - Plan to use 8gb of existing memory for a combined total of 24gb

GPU - Zotac (or the like) GeForce GTX 970 4gb 256-bit - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814500362&cm_re=gtx_970-_-14-500-362-_-Product

PSU - Corsair CX750 - 750w ATX12v - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817139040

Windows 8.1 64-bit

Am I missing anything? Overcompensating for anything?

Any feedback is greatly appreciated!

Power supply is oversized and not a very good one. For a single GPU and that processor, something like an XFX550W would be more suitable. Or a corsair TX, HX, or AX series if you prefer that brand.

24GB of memory isn't going to do you anything if you are just gaming. Just get 2x4GB of the some decently fast memory 1866 or 2133.

Thanks for the quick feedback....had a feeling the power supply was a bit overkill.

And I don't do any gaming on this PC.....primary uses are for graphic design/web browsing. Is 24gb overkill too in this case?

0) If you don't know about it, pcpartpicker.com is your friend, and will make putting builds together much easier.

1) You might be better off buying 16GB of faster ram, rather than 24gb of slower ram. Either that or take all 24gb and overclock it.

2) Generally for a photoshop machine, you don't overclock the CPU, and you don't have a cooler listed, so why did you buy an unlocked CPU and a motherboard that'll let you overclock? You could save a fair bit of money by going with a mid-range i5 and a h97 motherboard.

3) There is absolutely zero reason for you to have a 970. You didn't even list gaming at all in your list of uses, so why would you buy a $300 graphics card that's designed to run most any game on ultra. If for some reason the performance of your 550ti isn't satisfactory (probably due to the 1GB frame buffer), why not just buy a cheap card that has what you're looking for, instead of wasting the money?

4) Again, why are you buying a new power supply? There's absolutely zero need for it; your old rig draws almost exactly the same amount of power as your new rig, if not more... and the new rig could EASILY be powered by a 550w PSU of good quality. Again, this is a straight waste of money.

Basically, you're paying for things that you aren't going to make use of, and wasting a lot of money in the process.

He thought that the only thing you were doing is gaming... probably because the new rig looks like a gaming setup because of previous advice you were given.

Gaming only requires 8GB of ram at most - 16gb for the ridiculous cases with dozens of mods.

For photoshop work, ect, the more the better, always... but like I was saying just above, faster ram might be a better option than more, slower ram. (But you can always overclock your ram to get both.)

Thanks for your feedback, I was hoping to hear something like this.

I am not nearly as knowledgeable as I probably should be when dealing in this side of the design field and I probably was getting clouded vision by some of the impressive numbers and price tags these pieces were putting out.

I do not intend to overclock so I will certainly look at a more respectable board/cpu. As far as the GPU is concerned, I was worried about a bit of bottle necking when dealing with some of the files I typically create. Most range from 100-500 layers when all is said and done so I was looking for something that could easily keep up. After a bit of research I have since learned that the speed for this type of build situation comes more from the CPU and memory.

Also great to hear I can reuse the PSU. The newegg calculator spit out a number of 1200w which I thought was a bit ridiculous.

If I drop down the price of some of these parts that should leave plenty of room left to get faster memory as well.

What would you guys suggest for a CPU and GPU replacement?

Wow, I know the newegg calculator is awful, but that's... off by a factor of about two and a half.

I would go with something along the lines of this - going with a 24GB kit is going to be slower than 16 or 32, because it won't be able to run everything in dual-channel. This will get you speed, size, and a dual-channel connection.

Thank you both for the great feedback....I had checked out a few of these parts but didn't realize they were more in tune for what I was trying to accomplish. The research continues!
