Hi Guys,
I need to build or buy a fast-ish and capable machine for currency trading for the next few years.. I realise this has been covered before but I am assuming technology moves on and so may the answer.

My use is for a multi-screen pc. Currently 2 but possible 3 or 4 screens. I have 8-10 charts open at one time, but the graphics are not intensive. The trading platform I use is Java based. I log into the platform on their side, it isn’t a program on my pc. I currently use firefox for this but not sure if this is the best browser or not or whether it makes a difference. I will only be using the pc solely for trading, training webex and occasional live streaming of financial announcements and I will probably not turn the pc off very often. It will live in my office outside which spend most of the day at 20c ( not sure if that affects cooling)

My internet I think is ok, but you may be able to comment. 11.87Mbps download and 1.2Mbps upload with SKY.

I currently use an old workstation HP 8710w laptop with 4gb ram and 512 navida graphics on xp. Its ok but it does stall occasionally. I am not sure whether any lag is on the trading platform, computer setup, or internet, but in fast moving trading there is some lag present which I would like to improve.

It certainly isn’t a gaming requirement and even if you placed me in Wall St it wouldn’t make me Gordon Gheko so I am looking for a reasonable spec that will handle a few years of software upgrades before giving me grief.

I think I have 3 options, buy a new box with a spec you can recommend, Build a box with a spec you can recommend, or lastly buy a used recent gaming machine from ebay, from someone who is upgrading.

I am planning on using windows 7 64bit.

I have a brand new ATI Firepro 2450 video card which can be used.. Not the most recent card but I have read they handle multi trade screens well and for £40 I couldn’t refuse.

I believe the ATI card has an AMD chipset, does this mean I would have to use an AMD processor? Or would Intel work also? I don’t mind AMD processors, I have had a few machines with them and they have always seemed as good for what I do.

I was also thinking using a SSD drive only. As it would be a trading machine only a 256GB would be plenty and 8-16gb of ram.

Any help on specs and recommended and compatible chips, boards, ram and ssd would be welcome as would a pointer where they can be bought at the right price.

Thanks
John

Okay to clear things up, ATI is now AMD, since the name change in 2010 with the introduction of the HD 6000 Northern Islands Graphics Cards. You don't need an AMD processor to make the card work.

Secondly, your connection is fine.

Here is a quad core build, in such a tiny box with Wireless AC for range :) -

A super small system with lots to offer. Also incredibly silent, efficient and should last you 3 - 5 years.

Different approach, similar outcome.

Semi-modular PSU will be a help in such a small case.

The build in my signature is similar to what you want and very quiet. Here's the build log. http://www.tomshardware.com/forum/id-2328703/build-log-mini-itx-middle-school.html You only need the first page with the photos, otherwise the swamp is deep and wide.
