Hello guys, I am finally able to build a new rig. As in title I will be only using this PC for gaming.
I am torn between two : i7 4790k and z97 platform or i7 5280k and x99 platform. Which would be better for next 3 years? will i7 4790k with 2400mhz DDR 3 hold for next 3 years? or just better go with x99 ? Thanks in advance guys.

I would just go with the i7 4790k and z97. the i7 5280k would be overkill for just pc gaming. The 4790k should last more than 3 years as long as nothing goes wrong in your computer.

The savings aren't huge by going with the 4790K. Also you don't need 2400MHz RAM for gaming. I'm using 1333MHz RAM and games play fine. The speed of the RAM doesn't really matter much for gaming. Both systems should last for over 3 years. The 5820K might last longer than the 4790K if games start using more cores but I'm betting that both CPU's should last about an equal amount of time for gaming. The graphics card is what matters most when it comes to gaming and sli 970's should last for at least 6 years. I don't mean that they will be able to play on the highest settings for that long though but they should still be able to give you an acceptable gaming experience all the way up to that 6th year.

Not using the quad channel architecture is a waste, you missing out on one of the advantages of 2011-r3.
Putting the same CPU cooler on CPUs with 40w TPD difference leaves a lot to be desired, put something better on if you get a 5820k.

Thank you all for a quick reply. Well I don't think I will go SLI since I am planing on sticking with my 1080p monitor for at least 4-5 months more so one 970 will do just perferct. Only concern is if it is really worth to spend extra cash for Drr4 memory compatibility and extra cores. But I think I will get I7 4790k with Kraken x61 and clock it at 4.7 ghz . Hopefully it will be enought for at least 2-3 years :)
