EVGA Hadron Air CPU Cooling solutions

I've recently bought a Hadron air and I'm absolutly delighted with this little machine.

I've just sold my huge, original gaming PC running a baby Gtx Zotac 660ti Amp! to upgrade to the OCuk reference designed Gtx 970. I've also decided to try my hand at a spot of overclocking, and save a chunk of money, and have purchased the Intel Pentium G3258, which i plan to Oc to around the 4.5Ghz mark.
The board which I'm using is still in question, although I will most likely go with the MSI Z97i ACK gaming edition as I tried the z87i version and the cable management within the case was horrid.
Which leads me to my issue, I need to purchase a new CPU cooler as I know the system will get a little toasty if i use the stock cooler, that and it looks rather unsightly.

I want to use a top flow CPU cooler such as the Cryorig C1, or the Raijintek Pallas, as they both look rather nice and have decent board coverage. I am very open to the idea of replacing the CPU fan if necessary, as my personal goal for the system is to be running at no louder than 20db idling and know the fans with a lot of these coolers can get loud due to their thin profile.
At the moment the Cryorig C1 cooler is my favorite option due to the rather nice heatsink style, but am unaware of the compatibility with the mobo and case combination, which is hopefully where you amazing people can help me out :) Any suggestions for these style coolers would be amazing, and anyone with any insight into these two specific coolers fitting into this case and mobo combination would be greatly appreciated

Thanks for the usefull website there, quite a few nice coolers listed. With the noctua fans, I want to stay away from them as they mainly rely on the fans as the main component, where as I would like the heatsink to be better than just the standard, hence why I'm swaying towards the Cryorig C1. The main issue that I'm facing is the one of will it fit in the case, with the motherboard :/

Also, Noctua fans with a case with a window and the CPU area being the main focus is something I want to avoid. I really, really dislike their style and would therefore replace the fan, making the main component, and most of the cost, redundant.
 
I'm not as familiar with that cooler. Most of my builds are mini-ITX, but for my students, they cannot afford something as expensive as the Hadron Air.

That CPU will be around 1.3V wen you get to 4.5Ghz, and you may be near 100W. However, you don't need a huge or powerful cooler to get there.

I like the ASRock Z97E-ITX/AC which has enough power phases for that GPU, but what you have selected is also an excellent, but more expensive motherboard.

The Zalman 'flower' CNPS8900 Extreme or Quiet might get the job done too. I realize that you are looking at aesthetics and yours are different to mine.

I know there would usually not be a need for such a beastly cooler, but I know that the case will get rather warm, so I want the CPU cooler to not just efficiently draw heat from the CPU, but also to disperse the air over board itself.

As you've stated, due to aesthetics I will continue to look for coolers. In the meantime if you bump into anyone who knows if the cryorig fits into the hadron with my board/socket placement, please promptly throw them in my direction :D

Did as suggested and took the long shot of sending a message to Cryorig, and I got an amazingly detailed reply from them. The email i received is as follows:


Do you have the EVGA Hadron in your possession? If possible you can measure the distance of the edge of the ITX board to the hard drive cage. The C1 will extend 1.5cm out of the side of the ITX board when the long side is pointed towards the RAM section. This seems like the only orientation possible, as the C1 will also protrude out if it’s pointing A) toward back I/O ports. B) towards the PCI-E. If you don’t already have a ITX board installed, then try to measure the screw stump that’s closest to the HDD cage. You should need at least 2cm from the center of the screw stump to the HDD cage. If there isn’t enough space on this side then I must say that the C1 is not compatible with your case mobo combo.

There are a few options to mod the C1 to fit your system though. Removing the white shroud as well as switching to a 120mm fan and bending the black fin frame will get you around a 0.5cm reduction in length on the C1 which may solve the issue of interference with the HDD cage. However, we cannot recommend this since it will knock your warranty into limited warranty. I can only say it’s your call. The Asus board’s layout is actually almost identical to the MSI board, in respect of CPU socket location. The Asus board’s socket is only a few mm further way from the PCI-E slot. Distance from the back I/O and RAM side are almost identical.





I measured the distance from the edge of my mobo to the HDD caddy after this information and the distance is exactly 1.5cm/15mm. I mean exactly, a hair couldn't even fit through the gap. Hopefully in the next month or so I'll be able to afford to purchase a C1 and shall post some pictures and the results when/if I get the cooler :D

I can agree with the costs for the Hadron, but for a truly Itx case, it works out the same costs for the size of the case.
When considering the Hadron, i also had the Raijintek Mentis case in mind, which is priced around the £30-40 mark i found. Unfortunately, this would have increased the cooling costs to ensure no thermal throttling, and limited the GPU to the SFF ones such as the itx MSI and Asus cards, none of which are blowers, and also meaning that upgrading in the future would be a much larger feat if full sized cards where out of the picture.
By taking the hit on the case (which comes with a very high quality, if noisy at high temps, PSU) it meant that there was no need to limit the cooling options, and increase price elsewhere. Although I did find out that by creating an intake on the top of the case would solve a lot of the GPU heating issues. But ultimately I came to the decision that the Hadron looked nicer, and gave the better functionality. If i was unable to sell my PSU from my old system however, im sure the decision would have swayed to the Mentis, due to convenience, but as i managed to sell my old system as a pre-built, it worked out rather well.

Thank you for the suggestion again about contacting Cryorig, the cooler should be with me within the week, albeit it is second hand, but i will still post a log of the installation

P.S. the camera on the my Nexus 4 is potato quality so i apollogise in advance for the rubbish images to come, unless I can get a real camera from somwhere befor then :)
