SLI GTX 970 FTW+ -or- GTX 980 Classified?

I am torn between these the two setups and I am stuck at what to buy. Can someone please point me in the right direction? I know the SLI will give way better FPS, but what about the quality of graphics? Would the 980 out perform the SLI 970's in the "Ultra" setting? P.S. Cost is not an issue and I have sufficient power.

Someone has started a thread like this not too long ago :: http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-2325615/evga-gtx-970-ftw-980.html

I know, I have seen plenty of different posts, threads and videos. But nothing specifically answers if the 980 will perform better "GRAPHICALLY" over the SLI 970 setup. All I see are FPS scores.

What do you mean by "graphically"? If the 980 has higher fps it will make games look much better....

Sorry, I'm a bit salty from researching this for too long.. heh.. But, What I mean by graphically, is that I see the GTX 980 has more cuda cores and such than a single 970. I am talking shadows, grass, colors. If I were to SLI the GTX 970's, would there be an increase in cuda cores? From my understanding, when you SLI or RAID, it doesn't times by two. I feel like a single 980 would out perform the SLI in this category of looking great.

The visual fidelity at a given framerate will be the same, assuming the settings in-game are the same. The 970 and 980 support the exact same APIs and feature sets. The reason you only see FPS scores is because that is the chief objective comparative criterion. As you enable additional eye-candy in a game's settings, the framerate will take a hit. Therefore, it is true that a higher framerate will lead to prettier graphics, because it will enable you to turn up the graphics (resolution, shadows, anti-aliasing, anisotropic filtering, etc.) without slowing down the game so much that you can't play it anymore.

I assume you have already researched this enough to be aware of the downsides of SLI.

If cost is not an issue, get the 980 for its additional .5 GB of fully useable RAM (do a google search for "gtx 970 scandal" if you don't know what I'm talking about). You can always buy a second 980 later. If you buy 2x 970s, your upgrade path will be much more limited, and you will be stuck with less full-speed ram, which might make a difference in future games at high resolutions.

single 980 -> better system stability, better scaling , lower fps, higher vram(4gb),less heat, lower temps
sli 970 -> higher fps( with like 30% ) , compatibility issues, flickering issues, broken shadows, ghost images, lower vram( 3.5gb) , system instability, bad or non existing sli profiles, bad scaling, more heat, higher temps ( pretty much the usual dual gpu issues...)

You can decide for yourself if the 30% more fps worth it or not.
Honestly there is no way i would chose sli 970 over single 980. A single 980 is way much better solution in any circumstances in my opinion.
