I have my own custom built pc running windows 8.1. I have a mass storage drive for my steam library and my os is on there too. I realize now the speed of a ssd and want to add one in and i dont know how to approach the situation. I know for sure that i would not like to clone my drive onto a ssd because i woud need to buy a really big ssd. Also i know that many cloning software do not work with windows 8 anyway. I am really at a standstill and dont know what to do. I feel like my best bet is a fresh install of windows onto a ssd but i dont know what i would have to do with the original hdd drive in order for them to work together properly thanks for reading this long question. Please do your best to help me out.

Solution
I use a smaller version of this 1

http://www.amazon.com/Kingston-Digital-2-5-Inch-SV300S37A-120G/dp/B00A1ZTZOG/ref=sr_1_2?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1426556046&sr=1-2&keywords=ssd

That will be more than enough, just a word of warning, just double check where everything is downloading to, windows will set it all to save the SSD by default so you will need to change it for things like steam and itunes as you download, very simple to do, steam asks every time download a game and itunes it is an option in the settings, the first thing I did when I installed mine was fill it by installing dead space 3 on it, game ran really well though lol :p

providing you have the sata port on you're mobo, you just take windows off you're old drive, install the ssd and install windows, and thats it, some people like to take the old drive out while doing the install but then you get the issue of windows might not pick it up straight away, simple as that.

back up anything you want to keep, either to the cloud or an external, completely up to you. once you have done that, take the HDD out the pc, install the SSD and install windows, once that is done, turn the pc off, put the HDD back in, make sure you boot from the SSD, may have to change the boot order in the BIOS, once booted, format the HDD, which will completely wipe it clean and create a new folder to start with the new windows, that you're pc will recognise straight away

once it is installed you can just copy it back off of where ever you backed it up from, games can be a pain though, normally have to re download them, normal files will be fine once the transfer as long as they don't corrupt, which I have never seen but it can happen, any programs you have will do but if you back up you're downloads folder, as long as you haven't told windows to delete them, you will still have all the installers to reboot, you will also need to reinstall all the drivers again.
