So my external hard drive has caught a virus where when I plug it in, the PC recognizes but won't load a thing from it. When I try to do any type of scan on it or even so much as open it up, it stays stuck on a process until I turn off the drive. I really need help as I want to keep all the files on the drive but get rid of this virus.

Hey maskedskunk. Unfortunately it sounds more like the drive might be failing. Do you hear any unusual sounds/noises coming from the drive? What makes you think that this is a virus? I'd recommend that you try the drive with another computer and with another USB cable (not longer than 12") to see if the same thing happens. You could also try accessing the drive via Linux Live USB/CD to see if you're able to recover your data this way, or you could try some of the data recovery options from this thread: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/id-1644496/lost-data-recovery.html

Hope that helps.
