This is what I currently have:
Asrock Z77 Extreme4 ATX motherboard
Intel Core i5 3570K
Corsair Vengeance 4 x 4 GB (DDR3 1600MHz PC3 12800)
EVGA GTX 670 FTW 2GB x2 (with SLI bridge)
XFX 750W modular PSU
Lite-on IHBS112
Coolermaster 212 EVO CPU fan with extra fan on other side of fan block
Mushkin 120GB SSD
HGST Deskstar NAS 3.5" 4TB 7200 RPM
Antec Three Hundred case
Running Windows 10 after failed experiments with Win8.1 and getting sick of manually installing crucial drivers that didn't come with Win7 when I needed to refresh my OS

I used to play games on it but now it primarily just runs Sickbeard, Couchpotato, SABnzbd+, and Plex as services. It seems like every few months, I have some sort of issue that ends up causing major calamity. A power surge, most recently a move, where when I end up booting my PC, the Windows installation (on the SSD) is corrupt and I lose everything.

Thankfully, all media is stored on a secondary drive and those have never had issues. When reinstalling Win7, I've had to unplug all SATA but the SSD just to get it running again.

I'm to the point where I'd like to upgrade. The tower is big and a little loud, even with the fan speeds reduced. I'm thinking based on what's failing, the SSD and the motherboard are the two most likely culprits, both of which I'd like to upgrade anyway.

What else can/should I keep and what should I be upgrading? Would love to keep the cost down but still get something that feels like an upgrade, even if it's just a mini-ITX board and tower that runs a lot quieter and a new SSD that doesn't have these same issues. I'm so tired of reinstalling WIndows and losing all of my settings.

***Prefer Amazon but will go to Newegg or elsewhere for better price.

TIA!

According to everything I've read or seen, the z77 extreme4 was a damned good board, especially for the price. So I'm not so sure that would be the culprit for corrupted data on an SSD.

Personally, I think it's the SSD itself. I've pulled my pc apart several times, just tinkering, more times for a good cleaning, knocked it over once on the dining room table, dropped it once from that same table (dog played tug of war with the table cloth) and never had any errors from my Samsung 840 Pro. Mushkin makes really good memory, but nand is nand, that's not to say the rest of the internals in an SSD are up to the same standards, as mushkin doesn't actually make those parts. But it probably wouldn't hurt to move up to a 250/2x2Gb SSD either, so thats always an option.

The problem with the mobo is that z77 was not only top of the line, but also end of the line. The i5 3570k is still an awesome cpu, only a few % in performance behind the 4670/4690k. Upgrade really isn't warranted or needed. This is the dilemma. Find another z77 that will satisfy your need for a decent board, or opt for a sideways move to an equitable z87/97 board, and pitch out the cash for an equitable 4670/4690k. Either mobo will cost about the same, even on eBay, but you will need a new cpu if you swap to lga 1150.

Cases are very personal, you have to build it, look at it, live with it and it has to suit your needs and aesthetics. Do you want another full tower, larger mid, no optical bays, fan controllers, usb3, silent, black, Blue, pink, green or red with/with out leds, flashy, somber, plain Jane etc etc etc. There are many choices, think on it.

Okay, so i think I'm going to pick up a new SSD first, then. I do worry about the SATA ports on the board, but maybe that is also symptomatic of a bad primary HD. And while the case bothers me but the thought of taking everything out and reinstalling when I can just swap the SSD is making that sound more and more unappealing.

Thanks for reviewing and providing feedback on the build. It's good to know I don't necessarily need to upgrade yet. Picking up an 850 EVO 250 from Tiger Direct today and giving that a shot. Would probably get the Pro if I were inclined to wait for shipping but want to get the ball rolling today and that's what TD has in stock at a reasonable price. Fingers crossed.
