So I've created a bootable usb with windows 8.1 and I've used the exact same usb to install windows on my other pc but today I tried installing it on a dell latitude d620 which is quite an old laptop. I can boot the usb fine no problem but the problem is, when I click install windows it says something about no drivers being found. I've tried multiple usb slots and I am now guessing maybe the old laptop isn't compatible with windows 8.1? Not entirely sure but I'd be happy to install windows xp on the laptop (it's got one of those stickers on the laptop that says designed for windows xp). Just want to be sure before I wipe windows 8.1 from my usb and put windows xp on it.

Thank you ronintexas, that seems like it would work. I assumed I didn't need to remove the old OS (which was an unbootable windows me) to install windows 8.1. I'll post back here to let you know if it works.
