Wiring directly to a HD AUDIO/AC'97 header on the motherboard.

I have an old backplate with an orange (rear l/r speakers) and blue (sub/center) female jacks that I'd like to wire directly to the HD Audio/AC'97 - it's auto-sensing - header on my motherboard with jumper wires, so that the orange jack will work with a microphone (and, ideally, the blue jack can be used for front speaker output). Anyone tried this? The backplate has a 6 pin connector - the type with a missing pin 5. What would the connections be?

The scenario is: I've a 5.1 headset with built-in mic, but my motherboard only has three jacks built in and I've refunctioned them for the 5.1 in the Realtek control panel. That leaves me without a mic. So I'd like to use the old backplate I have to use the mic. I don't have a front panel on my case.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Jimbob.
