I don't drive but use my computer to provide maps for my husband who does. He says that Yahoo ,Google and other maps that I give him aren't any good. Is there a user friendly directions program, without added apps that come with it that I don't want, that I could use? It would be nice if it were free but it doesn't have to be. The main things are that it be accurate, user friendly, safe and easy to print. I have Moutain Lion on my Mac.

Solution
Yes, it is called GPS. All kidding aside, I never found a problem with yahoo or google maps. You could try mapquest.

You're going to have to write them out if he dislikes all of those options. I find it likely he doesn't like the style of writing (I know I don't).

Computers just spit out mechanical directions based off map data. The way map data is digitized leaves a lot of extra fluff in the directions. This results in situations where a 50 mile straight stretch of highway is broken into 12 directions all saying "Continue Straight for X miles."

These digital maps are really best suited to using a phone or GPS that will actively give directions.

I use TomTom on my cell phone.... costs me $25 in the apple store and does not rely on cell towers for its signal. There's also Waze, iMaps, Mapquest and Google maps.

I also bring along a copy of Yahoo Maps images and driving directions "just in case" but my 3 sons have never used a "map", just their phones. One delivers Pizzas while going to college, the other is a pilot and uses it wherever he is, the middle guy just uses it like me.

Everybody seems to have their "fav". For me it's TomTom, Son No. 1 likes Google Maps, Son No. 3 uses the iMaps, I dunno what Son No.2 using at this point. I have been using GPS Navigation for about 20 years ... started with my laptop, now on the smartphone. I dislike the ones that use cell towers as compared to the ones that use GPS as the former oft has to download maps as you travel and if you outta range of a tower, it can't do that.

Getting back tot he web based directions like Yahoo / Google.... here's some things to try that might help.

On a long trip, break it into segments. Say on a trip from NY => Wash DC to directions for:

-a. From NYC => North Jersey
-b. Jersey to Delaware

and so on...... can also zoom in and give images of major interchanges.
