Build Showing Wrong Graphics Card

Hey guys, I've used this site a lot in the past for various problems I've had with computers and such, but for the first time it seems I've got an issue I can't already find an answer to, so here goes.

I recently finished assembling my first PC (super excited about that). I made sure to do my research beforehand and everything was going great once I closed the case up, installed my OS and started installing drivers and all my favorite programs. Then I installed Steam and, to test out my new rig, ArmA 3.

At the menu I was getting literally 2 FPS, which is worse than my old laptop from eight years ago. Here's my specs:

CPU: AMD FX-6300 Vishera 6-Core
GPU: MSI R9 280 3G
HDD: Seagate Barracuda 1TB
Mobo: ASUS M5A78L-M

I've already done some troubleshooting on my own. I checked to make sure the all the fans were running, tried running with several configurations of the power plugs on my GPU (2 6pins, 1 6pin, 1 6pin+1 8pin, 1 8pin), nothing worked. When I connect both the 6pin and 8pin, my monitor doesn't even receive input, though the fans keep spinning. Somewhere through this process I opened up MSI Afterburner and it told me that I had a AMD 780 or whatever for my GPU.

To summarize, I think that my mobo maybe isn't picking up the GPU, or is perhaps misinterpreting it? The fans work and I've got it firmly slotted into the mobo (it clicked and the latch closed and everything), so as far as I can tell it must be inserted correctly.

I've already browsed a bit for solutions and saw that lots of laptops, especially with Intel mobos, seem to switch between an onboard and discrete GPU and sometimes problems arise when it doesn't switch right, but my build is a desktop, with no Intel parts involved. As far as I know the mobo doesn't even have integrated graphics. I've looked through all my BIOS settings, too. I'm at a total loss for what's going on here.

Please help me, fellow computer people. I so very much want my first build to be a success, and I get the worst sinking feeling at the thought that I've invested over $500 into it and it may turn out to just be an expensive internet browser.

Any suggestions?

Standard vga adapter is what it will be called if the drivers are not installed properly. Does the install go through without any errors?

After following the instructions of ccampy and reseating the GPU, I do seem to have made some progress. Although I lack the proper cord to attach my monitor directly to the GPU (it only came with the blue kind, but the GPU only has outputs for the white kind and HDMI), I was able to attach it directly to my TV with an HDMI cable. However, now when I open up Afterburner it says my GPU is a "Standard VGA Adapter," which doesn't sound very good. Looking through device manager I saw no mention of my R9 280 or any other graphics card but the Standard VGA Adapter.

Also, although the GPU seems to send output through its HDMI, my monitor isn't reading any input when I plug it into my mobo with the blue cable.

I'm pretty sure I did. Lacking an optical drive (waste of money for me), I put the contents of both the GPU and Mobo install discs onto a flash and installed everything on them as soon as I got the computer working for the first time. When I started having issues I even went onto their websites and installed them, twice. I'll try updating them again.

It worked! I guess I must have not mounted the GPU right or something, still don't understand why the drivers didn't work with it the first time around. I am now playing ArmA3 on ultra settings and pleased as punch.

Now I just have to get a new cord for my monitor.

Thanks for the help guys!
