Help! I can't open background tabs in Chrome with touch screen. I used to be able to hold Ctrl and physically touch links on the screen and they would open behind the current tab. Suddenly I can't do that. I can do it using the mouse, but I want to use the touch screen. To make a long story short, I have to open hundreds of tabs a day for work and anything that shortens this process is helpful. Thus, I want to use the touch screen.

I'm using the latest version of Chrome with Windows 8 on an Acer Aspire. I did not update any settings or change any settings. I have to use Chrome for my job, so if your advice is, "Just use Firefox/Opera/Another Browser," please keep it to yourself.

This is a visual representation of what I'm having problems with:

Please help!

I tried the exact same thing (on screen keyboard Ctrl + tap on screen) on Chrome on a Dell Venue 8 Pro and I am getting the same result as you do. Firefox works fine using the same combination of input so I think it is a Chrome bug. You are better off filing a bug report to Chrome.

Also, please do not tell a user to shush. They are entitled to the opinion as long as they follow the forum rules and giantbucket was trying to help.

Before Chrome is aware of this bug and fix it, we will use all community resource to find a solution to the problem.

on my touch screen: touch-n-hold brings up the context menu, then i can open tab and it opens in background just as if using mouse

i never knew about Ctrl-tap, but cool that it works on my machine. i hate Chrome anyways so never use it.

If your job allows you to install Chrome extension, try using the Force Background Tab extension on Chrome. I tested it and it worked. When you have the extension active, you can use the on-screen keyboard Ctrl + tap on screen combination to open a tab in background.

back to serious questions - when's the last time this worked properly? are there any background / automated updates that could have happened that decided to "break" this functionality? if you uninstall most recent updates or go back to a previous restore point (that's a bit excessive), does it work or stay broken?
