AMD Fx 6300 using turbo core when overclocking

Alright guys this overclocking noob needs some help. I built my first gaming rig a couple months back and I used an Fx 6300. This month or last, I picked up a Corsair H100i for overclocking. With some help from various sights and guides I was able to get a very mild overclock of 4.2Ghz with turbo core turned OFF. I know this isn't a huge overclock but it helped out my 280x which I was unknowingly bottle-necking . Well as you might have guessed, now I want more. I plan to get my CPU to at least 4.5Ghz. So my question to you guys is, can I use AMD's turbo core to overclock it farther? I'm saying manually set the turbo speed to 4.5Ghz but leave the normal core speed at 4.2Ghz so it isn't constantly idling at 4.5? Is this possible, or do I have the wrong idea? If I can do this would it be possible to lower the idle to its default speed at 3.5Ghz and use the turbo to push it to 4.5 GHz when needed? Thanks for the help.

Don't bother, FX 6300 supports Cool'n'Quiet, so it will downclock automatically when idle.

From all the articles I have read, everyone has said to turn this off when overclocking. I'm guessing I should turn this back on?

Also how far will this downclock? since I am running it at 4.2 GHz should I expect it to downclock to 3.5? Sorry for all the questions.

You're misinterpreting what turbo does mate.
Its an automatic setting which will only comes into play when 3 cores minimum are below 30% usage & at least 2 cores are above 70%.
Enabling turbo under over clocking is a bad idea as it re-enables APM functions that you may have disabled & could destabilise what you've done.
If your CPU is running at full speedcehile idling then you've done something wrong IMO.
Mine downclocks to 1400mhz under low usage on separate cores & will only hit 4.3ghz on all cores under heavy usage which is how it should be.

BTW 4.3 isn't really a minor oc IMO ,its around 22% & won't be bottlenecking your 280x at those speeds.

What mb are you running?

Edit - yes turn c&q back on.
Core c6 states & turbo disabled
If its a gigabyte board enable HPC mode.

Of course, You should probably use an utility like http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?277724-New-tool-AmdMsrTweaker to control the idle states or they'll use default voltage and crash.

this is making much more sense now. What I was looking for was a way to have my CPU run lower at idle, little did I know this is what Cool n' Quiet did...... I also didn't know you could use this while overclocking as I have only read that you have to turn it off or it will "ruin your overclock" I guess what I will do is go back into BIOS and turn it back on and try it out for myself, as I am tired of my CPU idling at 4.2GHz

Btw, my motherboard is only a MSI 970A-G43 so I won't be pushing this CPU far

^ NP - c&q should never interfere under load - c6 states is thevonecthat can interfere on fairly low quality boards like yours.

I honestly would not push any further on a g43 board - you're lucky to get that speed.
It has no vrm cooling & your h100 only worsens that.
These boards are known to throttle a 6350 & 8320 at stock so consider yours a good one.
