Motherboard doesn't use other ram sticks unless a specific one is inserted

I just replaced a dead mobo with this one and I have to make do with it for the moment.

The mobo is D975XLAG1(intel, doesn't appear on their website), it doesn't boot unless this 512MB 5300 5-5-5-15 stick is present, it's a real hassle getting it to boot after fiddling with things, I tried adding a 2GB 6400 6-6-6-18 saving the settings (set to 667) with the 512 present, it got it working, I'm using 2,5GB now, but removing the 512 is the same as removing botch sticks.
BIOS says single channel, but win7 says dual channel.

I suspect it's because the mobo doesn't go up beyond 5-5-5-15, anyway do I have to find 2x2GB sticks with the same timings or is it just the frequency/transfer rate?

Yes and yes, the 2GB on its own doesn't boot, iirc I have to start with the 512 and pick manual mode for ram timings which don't include 6-6-6-18 (limit is 5-5-5-15, frequency however can be set to 800), then save the settings and insert the bigger one afterwards which was the only way I could get it working
