Any idea why microsoft stopped supporting the wireless adapter?
They still support it as far as I know, but they no longer supply it as a standalone product. There's plenty on eBay and the like that claim to be official, but the fact that you can't buy one from any 'proper' shops plus regular reviews from people who buy one and then say it clearly isn't official is kind of telling.
It seems you
can get the wireless controller for Windows with the adapter included, including
from Microsoft (it doesn't say it includes an adapter, but it's not listed as a requirement so it must do), but when I was looking I only found the Microsoft website one and it wasn't worth the extra cost to me.
Another warning about that as I (thought) I bought one - Xeox make two versions that look almost exactly the same:
one has the PlayStation circle/square/etc on the buttons,
the other has the X/Y/etc of the XBox. Only the second one supports XInput which is a lot more important now with newer games. Not knowing this I'd collected the first one and ended up changing it for the official controller. I wouldn't say the sticks and analogue buttons felt quite as good as the official one, but the rubberised covering and overall shape was a lot nicer.

The XBox 360 controller for Windows is a Microsoft product, so as compatible as you can get.
