I am building a new gaming computer with an Asus A97-ar motherboard and an intel i5 cpu. Everything is hooked up, but when I turn it on it does not start up. I called Asus and they told me that the mobo bios has an older bios than the CPU. They said I have to buy a CPU with an older bios than the motherboard. This does not sound right. I thought that there was a way to update the mobo bios from a usb even if it is not booting.

The CPU is supported, so it's not a BIOS issue. Try starting the board with only CPU, CPU fan, single RAM stick, DVD drive, keyboard and mouse. Connect the monitor HDMI to HDMI (if possible). See if the CPU fan does spin and if any signal on the monitor.
