Hi, so i'm currently looking to build a PC just for general work, running a few programs, watching videos etc.

My question is, do i really need a graphics card?
And What is graphics card mainly used for?

I'm planning on using the i5 4460 CPU if that helps and a Gigabyte Motherboard.

Not all CPUs come with built in graphics capability and not all motherboards will use those graphics (even if they are present). But the i5 4460 does have built in graphics capability, so as long as the motherboard you get has a graphics port on it (like DVI, DisplayPort, or HDMI) then it will work. Of course, your monitor should have the same kind of port on it as well, or you would need a converter cable as well.

For watching video and office work, the integrated GPU on the CPU is almost certainly fine.
My wife's PC (same use) , and my HTPC (movies)...both run off the CPU graphics.

A dedicated graphics card is when you want to get more intense with graphics capabilities.

if you won't be playing any games, then the built in gpu of the i5-4460 is plenty enough. it will play back hd video and display programs fine.

a discrete gpu is needed for the demands of modern games as well as video rendering and processing. these tasks take more graphics power than an integrated gpu can offer. but for general office/video playback type work, it is good enough.
