Is this a good idea? I'm swapping Motherboards soon so I need to get my boot drive in order, do I format my 120gb Samsung evo 850 or buy a new one? Will formatting have any downsides like performance drop?

Solution
Just install Win7 like normal. The installation pgm. will overwrite the old directory with new data as it installs itself. No real need to do anything different.
But if you want the best outcome when installing Win7 to a SSD, follow this guide. It will save you some space on the drive, help you avoid pitfalls, and keep the drive from writing itself to an early death.
