Hi Tom's folk

This question could be in the wrong category as it is a bit of a mixture between a GPU and general System question.

I have an enviable dilemma choosing between GPU solutions. I have recently been gifted a new system from a friend who bought it and then immediately upgraded to i7.

It's a haswell refresh i5 4460 system with XFX r9 290 (reference model cooler) and 8GB 1300MHz RAM, only thing is I already have an i7 2600K system running GTX 760 (2GB) SLI and 16GB of 1600MHz RAM.

My system is connected to a 29" 2560x1080p IPS monitor and so I am wondering which of these systems is best to keep, and which is best to pass on to my wife, who is currently using an i3 3240/ HD 7750 system connected to a 2560x1440p monitor (no gaming, just surfing and general office use)?

In addition I also have an older system in the spare room as a spare gaming rig which has an i5 2400 in a B75 and a GTX680 SC card in it, which I have also considered moving on to my wife (minus the 680 which i would move to the i5 4460 rig if I swapped the R9 290 out into the i7 rig, and sell the 760's), but I am concerned that the 2400 (3.1Ghz Sandy) will actually be slower for what she uses it for than the existing i3 3240 (3.3GHz Ivy)?

I have also considered using the new i5 4460 as a HTPC, but apparently W8.1 (not Pro version) has no WMC included and I am not going to spend any more on an OS as it already has W8.1 installed, so i could use either the i3 or the i5 2400 systems for that duty as well?

I know these are confusing questions, but I'm after your thoughts on what you think the best options is/are?

R9 290 is a better choice in the end.
It's basically the power of two GTX 760's in SLI except it comes with 4GB of VRAM.
On top of that SLI doesn't work in some games so you'd be getting much less performance then a single R9 290.

ok thanks.

do you think the i5 2400 will be slower for general office tasks than the i3 3240?

For gaming i5 2400 is definitely a little better and it has 4 cores unlike i3 3240 that only has 2 cores.
But for daily office tasks i3 3240 would be better.
In the end if you're going to have to choose one, you should go for i5 2400 because gaming now days will have better use with 4 cores.

i would definitely recommend the r9 290 also (but the 970 is probably a slightly better choice) but i would never go with an amd reference cooler. the amd reference coolers are bulky, ugly, terrible cooling efficiency and are ridiculously loud, just get an aftermarket cooler for r9 290 it shouldn't cost much more.
