XBox 360 controller can't find drivers automatically, installed drivers don't work

I bought a Power A XBox 360 for use with my newly-built PC, and after plugging it in, my computer declared "Device driver software was not successfully installed" and that no driver was found. After going to Microsoft's site and downloading the appropriate driver, the controller still wouldn't work, and now attempting to install them again gives me a message that it's already installed, even after I explicitly uninstall the "XBox Tournament" driver (and there are no other XBox-marked drivers anywhere to be found.)

EDIT: I tested this with two other 360 controllers and had the exact same problem. The computer won't recognize any 360 controller at all.

Third-party controllers are generally not supported by the Microsoft drivers. In most cases, you'll have to get the drivers that correspond with that particular controller, and third-party manufacturers often do not offer this because they didn't build them with PC use in mind.

I'm told that this has helped some people get their third-party controllers working: http://vba-m.com/forum/Thread-xbcd-0-2-7-release-info-updates-will-be-posted-here
