If i want to have DDR3 1866 mhz or DDR3 2400 mhz memory do i need a Z97 mobo and a unlocked CPU (i5 4690K) or do i need just a Z97 with a normal CPU (i5 4460) ?

I am asking this because I am at the "buy button" for a new PC and with DDR 4 right around the corner I want to "future proof" it for later upgrades, in case higher memory speeds are needed in the future.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGA_1150.

You need a Z97 mobo to OC the ram. You can do it manually if you really want. But these days most ram and most motherboards are compatible with XMP - eXtreme Memory Profile. Where you put the ram into the correct motherboard sockets and enable XMP in bios and hey presto! the ram is running at rated speed.
