i5 4690k + MSI Hawk R9 270x

Solution
It's a good combo. If you're interested in overclocking, it's fine. If you're not, well then drop to an non-k i5 and get a more powerful GPU like a 280x.

What's your budget? What are you looking to do with this build? What other parts are you looking at/have?

The CPU is almost overkill for the 270X. It will be a decent mid range gaming system but I would try at least get a r9 280/x or a GTX 960/970.

You could pair an i3 with the 270x and save a lot of money and get the same performance.

Overclocking the CPU is the more popular of the two. If you don't know what overclocking is, that's OK just ask.

So you already have the GPU, RAM and PSU? And you are looking at upgrading the motherboard and CPU. If that's the case you're pretty much on point. You could save a few quid by purchasing a Asus Z97-A rather than the Extreme6.

No he's not. He's fine. He's only upgrading the motherboard and CPU. Upgrading GPU is easy compared to changing the motherboard and CPU. Getting the 4690k or really any i5 right now will serve him well for the future. He may not have the money right now for the a new GPU, but upgrading to a stout CPU that can support more powerful single and multiple GPU configurations isn't a bad idea.

so will my r9 270x run fine on high end games without bottlenecking with the i5 4690k? until i get a new GPU in like 6/12 months time?

Don't think of it like that. A CPU is not dependent on a GPU. A GPU is dependent on a CPU. A GPU cannot bottleneck a CPU. It can only have lower desired results because of a GPU. Like I said, don't worry about it right not. You'll be fine. If you want more performance down the road, all you have to do is upgrade the GPU (possibly the PSU but address that when you get there).

The reason for the GPU upgrade suggestion is because you didn't provide all the information from the start. Thus assumptions were made that you were buying a new PC. But you're not. So forget it. The 270x is a great card that will get you high settings on most games.
