hi all,

i have a problem with my seagate expansion 3.0 gb external hard drive, which i use it for storing multimedia/movie files i downloaded from here and there.

i think i've owned it for about 2 years, and it was working fine, then first there was "copying to" error started a month ago. copying from my internal hard drive to this drive would get stuck, and there was no system error message. it would just get stuck in the midway, say copying 4-5gb movie file, first file transter speed would drop down, and it would just get stuck. at that time writing to other drive was working fine.

so i bought another external hard drive to copy contents from the drive to this new drive, and this time, even writing to other drive wouldn't work. same problem, it would just get stuck.

playing stored multimedia/movie files still works fine without any problem, but there's a problem transfering (from to) files.

could you anyone please help/assist/solve my problem?

thanks,

Hi there paul2015,

I would advise you to start with something simple as just attaching the drive with a different USB cable. Trying the drive on another system will not hurt as well.
If the issue persists, I would advise you to test it with a brand specific testing tool. The test results, will eventually show you what is wrong with the drive.
Apart from that, you can try accessing the drive with some data recovery software. Check this thread out: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/id-1644496/lost-data-recovery.html

Hope any of this will help,

Thank you for reply. I will both check attaching the drive with a different USB cable, and the thread you mentioned.

I tried to check the drive by changing AC adapter, without success. And I ran windows system tools if it would show any error, and there wasn't any.

Next day or so, I will get extremely busy, but I will get back asap once I get some free time, which will be very soon.
Thanks again for your help :)

After trying more to copy files from the drive, also trying it with other USB cable, I realized it just didn't stop, but very, very slowly fluctuate in the speed.

Then, I got "error 0x80070037" message, and google it, and actually found many people are having same problem with me, which wasn't also brand-specific.
The problem seemed to be caused by the drive's mechanism fails in USB 3.0. And someone suggested connecting the drive to USB 2.0 port instead of 3.0. So I did and actually I could copy files from the drive at steady speed, without much problem. It was slow process, and there were occasional driver error notifications, but I saved all my files to my new external hard drive.

Luckily, I didn't lose any files, but this thing should last at least, like 10 years. I'm just very dissatisfied with the quality control of these external hard drives' manufacturers.

What a waste of time and money :(

Yeah, USB connection and other enclosure related problems are not a rare occurrence. Most of the times, the drive itself is completely fine.
Apart from that, I think that 10 is a lot even for an internal HDD. There are quite a lot of researches on the average lifespan of the external drives. I believe that it is way less than 10 years. :)
Regarding your drive, as you have backed up all your data and have nothing to lose, you can either get a third party external enclosure(3.5'' one) or just use it as an internal drive. You can try that if the drive is not under warranty. If it is, then I guess you can RMA it. :)

Cheers,
