i7 4790k vs i7 5820k

4790k is 279.99

5820k is 299.99

What is the better processor for the price? I will mainly be gaming.

I hear 5820k only has 28 pci lanes which may end up hindering my two gtx 760 in sli? Is x16/x16 worth it compared to x16/x8?

And finally I hear the x99 platform can be expensive to upgrade.

It also appears the 4790k is the top devils canyon and the 5820k is the lowest of the x99. Idk if thats something that matters...

I am getting one or the other after work today so any help in deciding is appreciated!

the i7 and i5 "only" has 16 lanes yet they have been rocking sli for years. unless you are wanting to run 3 -4 gpu's then the 16 lanes is plenty. x8/x8 sli is enough bandwidth for ANY 2 cards on the market. been shown over and over again in benchmarks. the 28 or 40 labes for the x99 won't do any good for the average set-up but will cost hundreds more.

as said above, the i7 is more than nneded as well. 4690k on a solid mobo with a good oc will game as well as the other more expensive cpu's

Admirable
The I7 4790k is the better gaming cpu out of the box for 1 or 2 gpus. For 3 gpus, you'll need an I7 5820k. For 4 gpus an I7 5930k/5960x.

Either way, the price difference of 20 bucks is meaningless, but you would pay like $200 extra for the more expensive ram and motherboards if you choose to go with the I7 5820k. For a pure gaming point of view, the I7 4790k is a much better choice.

However, the I5 4690k would do exactly as well once overclocked to match the I7 4790k's clock speed. Therefore, you'd better save the $100 and/or spend them towards a cooler like the noctua nh-d15 or towards a stronger or second gpu.

5820k only has 28 pci lanes is this a big factor in SLI cofigurations? x16/x16 compared to x16/x8

did u mean 8 instead of 80? i really dont want to go x16/x8 if i know that may be an issue down the road

Thankfully I found this thread. I went through the same process in deciding between the two processors.

I'm getting 8gb of ddr3 ram for free because of the mcafee/crucial bundle on tigerdirect. So, because of that, it makes even more sense for me to go ddr3/i7 4790k.

I went to Microcenter and bought the i7 4790k and gigabyte gaming 7 motherboard and it will be about 400 after taxes and rebates. With a free 8gb ddr3 ram (after rebates) and possibly going to try another free 8gb (total of 16gb) I think I'll have a good setup.

5820k would be nice but you would pay more for motherboard and I would have to pay for DDR4 ram as well. Also, I'm going to use it primarily for gaming anyway and I hear there isn't much difference between the two processors.

you also made the right choice :)

give it another year or so for the ddr4 prices to come down before moving to it. also have to see what the skylake will bring later this year. supposed to support ddr4 as well and might be cheaper than the x99 is currently.

no real reason to go above the z97 for now, will be plenty of power for a few years yet.

Yes Skylake will suppport DDR4 so I'm assuming prices will drop massively once Skylake is released.
