HI,

I've been strugling with this issu of a while.

My home is wired using cat5e (all rooms have cat5e jack). In the basement there is a patch pannel (see image: https://www.flickr.com/photos/84802180@N00/16863202532/),

My questiobn is: can I just punch in ethernet cable (from modem, fiber internet connection) in the "line in" patch and magically have internet routed to each room with the already patched cat5e?

I see there is only one pair patched, would I need all 4?

I cannot imagine this to be very complicated but is there a step i'm missing?

You need to completely rip that out and start over. That is for telephone only.

Best option is to put in a standard ethernet patch panel. You would then run patch cable from this patch panel to a switch. You would plug your router into this switch to provide internet.

You can if you want to be cheap and the wires are long enough just put rj45 ends on each cable and plug them directly into a switch but I would recommend the patch panel.
