Non existent "New Volume (F:)"

I just replaced a 250 GB Hard drive on my Dell Laptop with a 500 GB drive. All went smoothly and it boots up fine except for one minor irritation. I am getting a pop-up box with one of two messages. Either I get: New Volume (F: ) Open Folder to View Files or I get an error message stating that I need to Format the F Drive before I can use it.

In both cases the box only shows for a few seconds before it disappears, If I am quick and click the button to view the files it opens a directory but that also quickly disappears.

When I look in Disk Management I see my internal CD ROM Drive D: and my external DVD R/W Drive E: but there is no F: Drive.

Any thoughts on what is happening?

Sincerely,
John

Hey there John. That's a bit puzzling. Would you please post a screenshot of what you see in Disk Management about the drive and the other partitions (you can use imgur.com to upload the image).
If it's not seen in Disk Management perhaps you could try accessing the drive via Linux Live USB/CD as well, to see if there's something else there besides the partitions you've created.

So I downloaded Linux Live USB/CD and am not sure what I was supposed to do with that. When I ran the software it gives me a choice of a Hard Drive or a USB Key. When I check Hard Drive a Pop Up shows which says "No Disk Selected"

What would happen if I just deleted the F: Drive reference in the Registry?

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows Search\VolumeInfoCache\F:

The Volume Label is "New Volume"

Also would I then have to delete the G: H: and I: references?

The only reason I didn't to see what would happen is because the Volume Label for H: is RECOVERY which seemed ominous.

Any thoughts?

So I backed up my Registry and deleted F: G: I: references and renamed H: as F: so as not to lose the RECOVERY reference.

Restarted and it told me I needed to Format F: to use it...

So I went into the Registry and deleted the F: reference as well.

Restarted and I get: "New Volume (F: ) Open Folder to View Files" again.

Checked the Registry and it was back with the Volume Label: "New Volume"... but it isn't there. Disk Management shows the same as above.

It does seem that it has something to do with the old 250 GB Disk. I put the old disk in a Rocket Fish external Hard Disk holder and that should be the F: Drive I think. It doesn't show under the Computer directory though.

When I go into Disk Manager however it is there. When I right click on it and try to add a drive letter I get an error. http://imgur.com/htb5Ibb

Tried AOMEI Partition Assistant to try the same thing and it errors out as well.

Success!! EaseUS Partition Master Free. Basically had to delete the old partition and repartition the drive. Neither the MS Disk Management nor AOMEI Partition Assistant would do it, but Ease US Partition Master did.

Thanks for everyone who spent time on this. It is appreciated.

Spoke too soon :fou:

Disconnected the external and restarted now it says: You need to format the disk in Drive G: before you can use it. Do you want to format it?

Selecting Yes gives the same error message.

Windows can't format G
Check to see that the disk and drive are connected properly...
