I was sold on the Intel i7 4790k I read some great reviews and seemed like a good choice.

My friend has an AMD build and basically said I am paying so much more going for Intel over AMD.

Intel Core i7-4790K 4.0GHz $279.99

AMD FX 9590 Black Edition 4.7GHz $219.99
(^Processor he mentioned^)

Is this true?

What is the actual performance like? Is the Intel Processor worth the $60 difference?

The intel is Almost a whole ghz slower then AMD?

I hear the 9590 black is just an 83xx with higher voltage?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

The only thing your friend is taking into account is clock speeds.
Overall architecture and single core performance matters much more than clock speeds.

The 9590 can barely compete with the i5 4690k, let alone the i7.
The 9590 is also just a (hardly stable) OCed 8320.

The i7 is far superior to the thermal garbage that is the FX-9xxx series.

That being said, any of the Boss sites (CPU Boss, GPU boss etc) are extremely poor sources. They report false results, get specifications wrong, and use synthetic benches.

Not cheaper for going into Intel....but correct for Performance

Intel would require way more money to spend just get to maximum experience.

However,
If you want save money and used saved up money to get better parts then go for the strongest AMD.

GPU and CPUBoss are legitment (Not as accurate) Can answer your question about which one is better?

My thoughts exactly, go with the i7.

Another vote for the i7. In most tasks the fx 8xxx/9xxx are lucky to keep up with the i5, let alone the i7. The 8 core amd doesn't fare well in benchmarks (real or synthetic) against a 4 core i7 and they hardly ever compare it to an 8 core i7. Amd's plan when pricing their cpu's and some they've lowered prices on dramatically isn't to severely undercut intel. They're not offering i7 performance at i3/i5 prices. It was to make their products competitive in terms of performance compared to intel. Performance head to head, a similar amd cpu might be around $10 cheaper but if a particular chip is close in price to that of an intel cpu it's likely that's the level where it performs.

Admirable
Actually the I7 is even cheaper when you take $280 and $210 as prices. The I7 4790k will do fine on any socket 1050 board just fine, even on h81 ones but especially z97 ones in the $100 range. The fx 9590 is only supported by high end 990fx boards for $180+, this alone does already make up for the cpu price difference and both are equally priced. Then, you can run the I7 on the stock cooler or even do overclocks on a $30 aftermarket one. The amd 9590fx requires a high end AiO cooler, which is $90+. Now, the fx 9590 is about $100 more expensive and you can't overclock it at all. And then, theres energy cost. The I7 draws like 0-2w idle and 80-90w under full load. The amd fx 9590 draws like 5-20w idle and 200-220w under load. Imagine you were to run the cpu for several hours a day for a year, that's like $100 price difference. And last but not least there is performance. When you get something done quicker, your cpu can idle more, meaning it will draw less power and stay cooler.
