New graphics card opinions.

So with the possibility of my current graphics card being junk. I'm looking into new ones. My question is how much of a graphics card do I need. I currently have a r9 290 and I know it's over kill. I'm looking into nivida cards this time. Amd cards have giving me quite a few problems.

I play games such as modded minecraft and skyrim but I was looking into shadows of mordor. Would the gtx 960 (I found one with 4gbs) be enough, or should I save up for the 970.

My rig:
Fx-6300 6 core 3.5ghz
8gigs ripsaw 1866 MHz ram
600w corsair psu
1 tb 7200 rpm hd.
Gigabyte mobo( I don't know the model off hand)

Also which brand should I get? I've never owned a nivida card. I normally get sapphire amd card.

Thank you for any help!

You already know I am a bit bias on this one but I would go 970. Firstly for the performance but also because if your big into skyrim, modding is where the fun is at and the extra 2GB of RAM on the 970 will come in handy. Also Shadow of Mordor (really fun game) will take advantage of the 970.

I'm not going for better. I have a very limited budget atm and the 960 fits it perfectly I just don't know if it's worth the extra 100 bucks to get the 970 if I'm only playing a few games. As far as quality of the games I would like to play atleast high on shadows of mordor

I personally wouldn't go from a 290 to a 960, especially if it's going to cost you money. What kind of problems are you experiencing with the 290? If you had to switch I would save up and go with the 970, unfortunately I can't wrap my head around going from a 290 to a 960, thats a big step down.

The 290 is constantly crashing. Every time I do any thing such as a game or bench mark it crashes with in a min. Black screen and sound loop. It's either the psu or the card. And since amd cards have giving me problems in the past, my bets are on the card. My buddies going to test it next week so I'll know for sure.
Also I know my CPU bottlenecks the 290 and it is complete over kill but it was on a great sale (100 bucks off) if it is the card I'll need something and being on a tight budget I need cheap. The 960 seems perfect for price but I'm not sure because I don't know nivida well

Send it in for warranty repair/replacement?

I'm past the return policy and I'll look into sapphires warranty when I get home. I've just had so many issues with amd cards I'm not sure I want to bother with the hassle

Sapphire has a two year warranty so if your in that time frame I would definitely go that route first. Some time you get a bad card but I have been there with AMD and Nvidia so it really depends on how lucky you are.

Yeah I'm going to have my buddy test my card in his rig, he's got a bigger psu and see of that's an issue. But if it is the card back to my original question is the 960 enough for my purposes or should I got 970.

Lol I was probably going to go for the 970 just because I like having more power then I need and I heard good things about it. I'm hoping it is my psu, since I was planing on upgrading to a 750w anyway.

Just got my PC back from my buddy he has confirmed that the gpu is bad. I have ordered a evga 970 ssc and I will be sending the r9 290 back. More then likely be getting a new amd card or nothing since I've had the card a few months. Either way I'm giving nivida a try. Best answer has been picked thank you all for your time!
