Hello
I've just finished building my first gaming pc with 2x4gb sticks of 2133mhz ddr3 ram. A friend recently tried to "speed up" his pc by buying new ram, 2x2gb 1333mhz. It didn't work out for him so he was about to throw them away but gave me them instead so i tried mixing them and luckily got 12gb but a slower speed so i'm wondering if i shuold keep using them or if it's a waste of speed.

Solution
I'd stick with the 2133 sticks, can always hang on to the slower sticks in case a time comes where you need more DRAM, like say video editing projects
It depends on your GPU and CPU, but it probably won't make much difference. 8GB at 2133 will be faster for gaming (and pretty much everything else). The 12GB may have some advantages if you have applications that can actually use that much RAM.

Mixing and matching RAM may have a dramatic negative effect. RAM tends to clock down to the slowest RAM installed. I am not entirely sure with modern boards but Mixing has never been a great idea. Your 8gb at 2133 would walk over the 12gb Franken RAM at 1333. If it works at all. It may make your Dual Channel 8gb drop to Single channel (All bad).
