I need to replace the hard drive in my old workhorse, a Dell Dimension E510. Since it's running Windows XP I want to upgrade to Windows 7 at the same time. Are there any recommendations on brand and size of the hard drive, and also, can new hard drives be purchased with the OS already installed? Thank you for your input.

After you've done all those things in terms of time and labor (new hard drive, new OS, installation time, installing all the programs again) - are you sure it's not more efficient to spend like maybe $400 on a new low-end Dell with all those things already done, better performance and maybe even a RAM upgrade?

You need to copy and paste the link, the software here truncates it!

It makes absolutely no sense whatsoever to stick an SSD into a 10-year old Pentium D 820. I'm not even sure that the Motherboard isn't AHCI and not SATA.

There are no drivers beyond Vista for that setup.

"runs fine" probably means different things to different people. :) Also, there is the small matter of cost. OP wants to install Windows 7. That's $100. the Dimension e510 originally shipped with 1Gig of RAM - he'll need to upgrade that. Then there's no getting around the fact that the processor is a Pentium D 820. Positively ancient in hardware standards.

They most likely shipped with 120-160 GB hard drives, so you'd have to go to a 240GB SSD for a moderate increment of storage space. Cheapest today on PCPartpicker is about $85. SO the total outlay for OS, RAM and SSD is about $200. For that, or for $100 more you can buy a new PC that has all of that and much more.

Have to agree here, a new computer is the best way to go especially since no drivers for windows 7 and up.
