Imaging the boot drive is always a good idea for many reasons, not just as a recovery solution in the event of a malware infection.
But it's also a good idea to have a good antivirus package installed in the first place.
I too download files on a regular basis but I can't remember the last time my PC had a virus infection.

For disk-imaging I use this: http://www.disk-image.com/

If you want a free one, try this: http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx

or this: https://www.runtime.org/driveimage-xml.htm
