I currently own dual GTX titans that on water. I haven't overclocked them but they work real good at stock clocks. Now, the question that arises in my mind is that, should I buy a single GTX titan X? or my current setup is good enough?

Solution

Actually, you are not getting 12GB of VRAM. You do have a total of 12GB, but in an SLI or Crossfire setup the amount of VRAM used is only relative to one card. Meaning that if you have two OG Titans @ 6GB per card, then you are only using 6GB of VRAM. If you were using different cards like a 780Ti Classified @ 3GB and a Titan at 6GB then the SLI would default to the 780Ti @ 3GB of VRAM. If you only have one...

Your setup is perfectly fine and it would be a waste at the moment for you to get rid of those two cards for the Titan X. However, if you have a situation that requires you to obtain a more power efficient card or you need more VRAM due to multiple panel setups that's really the only situations I would recommend getting the Titan X. I have two 780Ti Classifieds on a single 1440p panel and there is no reason for me to even go to the 980 for example.

I am little concerned about the VRAM as well. two of these titans in total are giving me 2x6GB = 12GB VRAM. whereas single Titan X is a single 12GB. I am getting 4k in near future, so I want to make sure that I don't run out of memory. I have also heard that when dx12 will come it will be 6+6 12GB, means it will be stacked.

If you only have one panel and you do not plan on getting more then 6GB will be more than plenty for now and I would wait till prices drop to get the Titan X. However, if you do plan on getting more panels pretty soon or already have that type of setup then you might want to consider the Titan X. Keep in mind it is about $1K USD right now.

Update: Really then it is up to you whether you feel it is necessary. To be honest, you're perfectly fine running 4K with your setup. Also not many panels run 4K at more than 30hz.

Yes, I was also thinking of pascals. As these are promised to bring the 10x performance of Titan X

Yeah, for the current DX11 iteration this is true and I am well aware of it. But talking about the DX12. Don't you think it will help out to a total of 12GB? as I have read somewhere that DX12 will allow for stacked memory option. And I should mention. I am sticking to a single 4k monitor.

nah. that is more PR thingy :p . but most likely will be built on newer node and the first time nvidia will use HBM. so far we did not know much about Pascal other than it's feature that built for compute crowd.

so far all i know this is rumor. there is no details from MS about this. we saw MS give more info on DX12 at GDC but as far as i know MS never really talk about such thing. if they really did then there must be bigger coverage on it. all i know the talk about combining VRAM in multi gpu setup was made by AMD. even that is not really clear. is it specifically through DX12 or is it possible with low level API in general. personally i still treat it as a rumor until there are official info from MS themselves

Enough reputable sites have corroborated the features of DX12 that it's generally accepted now even before official MS announcements.

DX12 will pool VRAM. If you have a pair of 6GB cards, under DX12 the system will have access to 12GB of video memory, instead of mirroring the frame buffer. This is because under DX12, each card will render a portion of the screen instead of the current system where the cards alternate rendering entire frames.

@Fareel Raza 6GB is already enough VRAM for 4K gaming by itself.

...what really blows me away about DX12 is the ability to combine resources from an AMD card, an Nvidia card, and integrated graphics all in the same system!

That's good to know. thanks

It's a nice thing to hope for obviously, but until MS actually announces that's what will happen I wouldn't hold my breath. That would really suck if everyone says it will and then MS comes out and doesn't have it happen. Better to be positively surprised.

Hence why I made my last comment. Not to mention, I said earlier in the thread that if depends on the resolution.

@OP: Just don't be sold on the hype of DX12. Until MS comes out with and announces that they have the tech to pool VRAM, you can't.

is it up to game developer or? while combining both AMD and nvidia GPU sounds nice i don't see both company going to work together to make it work. there are similar attempt in the past but it goes nowhere (MSI Big Bang Fuzion). often instead of working together they will come with their own initiative. if the work was leaved to game developer alone that it might not going to be used more than a few AAA title. just look what happen with Mantle when AMD give developer more control. in Sniper Elite 3 there is no crossfire support in Mantle while DX11 version did have one.

Thanks for your answers guys. As the thing about which I was concerned has been solved. Now, I want to know which 4k monitor to buy. probably a one with G-sync enabled? Please tell me which ones are good and worth money to buy. Thank you!

What size would you like and what is your budget?

Sir, my budget is under $1000. I prefer the one with larger diagonal. I was thinking about a 40 inch 4k LED TV, but I think they'll cost more.
