gtx 980 g1 changing thermal paste HELP!

I want a cooler card and I have some spare arctic silver 5 thermal paste, this paste reduced my cpu by 10c.

So would it be worth changing the paste or does these GTX 980 gigabyte G1 already come with high quality thermal paste?

I wouldn't dismantle your card just to apply thermal paste. I also can't see how AS5 reduced your temp. by 10c by itself. Mayonnaise versus AS5 is only a few degrees difference(while the mayo is still wet).

Spot on. The G1 gaming card has a great cooler and they are not going to risk that by using cheap paste. Do not worry about it. Also removing the cooler voids the warranty.

I have a i7 4970k that was running idle 45c now its on 35c after a reallly long break in period. AS5 worked for me great

Decided im going to change the thermal paste to AS5. I have just ordered some screw drivers to open up the GPU, Ill post back with my results for anyone who has the same problem.

got some bad news and good.

I managed to knock off 20c of both idle and max temperatures GREAT! right?

I opened up furmark and to my surprise my FPS as dropped ALLOT I was running 1080p furmark at 85 fps now its 60fps what has happened I am baffled and I cant find anything similar to my problem anywhere on the internet.

My method for the AS5 was a small pea size this created a perfect circle around the center of the GPU with out touching the sides

My only assumption is when I saw the stock paste on there it was a massive blob, it had formed rectangle blocks around the cpu like a frame I believe and everyone uses the credit card method on there GPU on the internet so I have ordered some IC diamond 24 carrot and see if using a blob of thermal paste will make a difference.

But what I don't understand is that I managed to make this card run at 20c cooler why has my performance been crippled so badly?

I just ran valley and heaven they were giving me same score before the change so I tested out furmark again and its finally fixed it self

I also have an 3 fps increase and 15-20c cooler temps at max load after the break in period of the AS5 i hope to see better idle tempretures

I have no idea why the GPU acted this way very strange, I wont be doing this again to a £500 GPU
