Sorry if this is a bit redundant wth my post from a month or so ago but I've decided to build it myself rather than going with BTO shop and plan to go shopping this week. Here's my shopping list:

Corsair Air 240
Gigabyte GA-Z97M-D3H
i5-4460
Corsair Vengeance Pro DDR3-1600 4GBx2
Gigabyte GTX 750ti 2g
Seagate SSHD ST1000DX001 1TB
Silverstone SST-ST50F-P ATX 500W
and topped off with Windows 8.1.

This comes in at 110,000 yen (about $900). I might be able to squeeze out another 10,000 if it'd make some huge difference.

I'll mostly be playing Skyrim, Empire Total War and possibly Rome2...
Any thoughts? Recommendations?

If the 960 with the 500w would be the same price as the 270x with a 600w then go with the 960, But you only really need a decent quality 500w supply with at least 35 amps on the 12v rail to run the 270x.

Lou, thanks for replying. Yeah, an H97 would be fine, as I likely will never OC on this build, but the Z97 is actually a bit cheaper. Go figure?!

Cheers,

Kwa-e, I was considering an M-itx build as space is scarce in my tinyTokyo home, but Mitx builds, (unless I use a big Matx/Mitx case, which would kind of defeat the purpose) run a little more expensive, a little more hot, and, from what I've read, are a little more difficult to assemble (and this is my first build).
Also, I like having the option to upgrade to two cards in the future, even if I never do ;-)

Cheers,
Jamey

Ah i see, If you are going for the 750ti you might as well buy a single r9 270, if it doesn't cost too much, will give you higher framerates at 1080P.

You can also crossfire the r9 270, but the 750ti cannot sli.

Hmm... I've always been an "Nvidia guy" but maybe it's time to reconsider. I can get a RADEON R9 270X 2GB 256-bit GDDR5 for the same price as the 750ti I had my eye on.

One other consideration... For an extra $50 I could get a GeForce GTX 960 2GB 128-bit GDDR5...
Between the r9 270x and the GTX 960, which do you all think is better?

The 960 will perform about 6-8% better in games than the 270x in games, I'd get the 270x instead of the 960 since $50 is simply too steep to me. How much do the R9 280's cost there compared to the 960?

And it seems that your motherboard and will not allow you to run two graphics cards in the future, you might want to see if you can get a z87 or z97 motherboard with this PCI-Express slot configuration.

Hey Kwa-e,

The 280 would be about $30 more than the 960. However, for either radeon card I'd likely upgrade the psu to a 600w which would add another $60 dollars.
So I think the 280 is just beyond budget.
But what do you think of the 960 vs. the 270x considering the 270x would also resilt in me upgrading the psu. So, total cost is the same. 500w psu + gtx960 or 600w psu + r9 270x?

Thanks for all your input! I think what I'll do is get a 600w psu, as I spotted one that is only about $20 more than the 500w. It's the SST-ST60F-PS, 80plus silver rated, fully modular and has 49A on a single 12v rail. Along with that I'll give the 270x a try since I've never used a Radeon product and it's actually $10 cheaper than the 750ti I had originally planned on.
Thanks again.
