Hi everyone, I'm new around here and am getting ready to build my first system and need some advice. I want to install windows 8.1 to a ssd drive and have a hdd drive for storage. In doing research it seems the majority of things I've found say to install windows to the ssd with the hdd disconnected and once the installation is complete then connect the hdd. Would this be the best method for doing this or is there a better way to do this? Sorry for the long post and thanks in advance.

Yes. Having only the target drive connected (in this case your SSD) is the highly recommended way forward.

Why?

Because when Windows installs, if there are 2 or more drives connected, the System Reserved (boot info) ends up on the second drive. If you ever want to take that out, or it dies...no boot for you.

With only one drive connected, the System Reserved partition ends up on the primary drive.

All you have to do is leave the SATA data cable disconnected during the install. Connect it after. 5 seconds.
