Hi, help!

I have a HP h8-1075uk with an i-7 2600 3.4 cpu and a GTX 550 Ti with a "chicago" motherboard.

I want to upgrade to a GTX 960 ssc evga 2gb gpu.

I know that I probably need to upgrade my psu from 460w.

I need to know please what motherboard to buy or what specs I need to have in a motherboard in order to do this and what other steps to take; I can't seem to pin down what it is I'm looking for in a motherboard to make this configuration happen.

I think that the cpu is ok. I will upgrade the psu. My motherboard bios is incompatible I know, but I just need some plain explanation of what I need to put that card with my i-7 in my rig.

Thanks very much in advance. PC specs below;

If you have Windows 7 the license is tied to the motherboard so you will have to buy a new copy. You will have to reinstall Windows with the motherboard swap anyway. The good news is Windows 10 will be free to people who own 7 and 8 so if you hate 8 you can still skip it.

Pretty much any LGA 1155 motherboard would work. You are in the UK right? You guys finally got PCPartpicker there so that makes it easier.

Something like this is fairly cheap and would work fine. That's $83 US dollars so even though you usually pay more for computer stuff on that side of the pond it's still a good deal even here in the US.

You don't need to change motherboards. The GTX 960 goes in the same PCI-E slot that that GTX 550 Ti is in. You should also be fine with the stock power supply as the GTX 960 is a Maxwell based GPU and very efficient. It only requires a 430w power supply.

Wow really? I had a guy tell me on the HP support forum that the Chicago motherboard won't run a 9 series card as the bios needs to be level 8 and that mobo won't upgrade to that bios(?) quotes;

"The "Chicago" motherboard will not support the NVIDIA 9xx series graphics cards with some exceptions. The exceptions being if the graphics card manufacturer will supply you with a replacement NVIDIA 9xx card that contains a different video BIOS."
And...
"Basically the BIOS in your PC needs to be at a version 8 level before the NVIDIA GTX 9xx series will work. At power up the BIOS and the graphics card will go through a series of compatibility hand shakes and acknowledgements and if there is not an agreement established then the graphics card will not work."
And...
"If you are determined to use the NVIDIA GTX 960 then you will need the following items:

Motherboard
500 watt power supply -- optional but highly recommended
Windows license"

Could you guys confirm that I can go ahead and get that 960?

Extremely grateful for your time.

OK if HP support says they are not compatible with the BIOS of that board then you should listed to them. That's the problem with some OEM boards as HP, Dell etc. buy as cheaply as they can and intentionally don't make their stuff so you can upgrade as they want you to buy a new computer from them. So sorry but it probably won't work. :(

The board has the correct connections just not the correct BIOS.

Ah ok, thanks for that, could you pls advise me on a choice for a new motherboard in that case which will run the card with my i-7 2600 3.4? Also when HP says I would need a windows license if I changed the mobo; does that mean my os won't work with a new mobo as it was bundled with the Pavilion PC?
Many thanks(might be new pc time :) )

Hi again, sorry but one last question(s) please!

Just to clarify, will I need a completely new physical copy of W7 for a totally fresh install or can I buy a licence only and use that to re-activate my HP oem version with all of my files remaining intact on my drive? Will I be prompted for a licence key after swapping out the mb and gpu and re-booting, thus enabling the original os to continue with a new licence?

I have honestly trawled the forums and can't seem to pin down this exact issue.

I am going to keep everything apart from the motherboard and gpu.

I have looked into guides on backing up drivers, but if you have any links for explaining the process of driver backup/re-installation with a newly licenced oem W7 on a new mb; well that would be very nice.

Many thanks.
