Scrapped off thermal grease thinking it was dirt, also made different upgrades, Video games and Videos not rendering properly

especially cut scenes are choppy and games look strange.

I had bought a new video card, and psu to go with it, installed PSU upside down and it blew out.

Got a new psu, and motherboard. I'm not sure at which point I scrapped off thermal grease off the CPU thinking it was dirt. Ever since video games look choppy tried two different video cards not the video cards. switched motherboards not the motherboard.

Could it be the paste or the CPU?

I'm doubting that a lack of paste can cause these problems and the CPU is burnt.

Not possibly memory correct? Trying to buy ASAP so nothing else burns out.

  1. You scratched the heat spreader and then put the CPU in without TIM? Stop using it immediately.
  2. The CPU needs thermal paste or it will overheat.

I did this about 5 months ago so damage must already be done. I just need advice on what to get.

Also do I need a new heatsink or is that unable to get damaged
  4. It's probably not damaged. The choppiness you experience is the CPU thermal throttling to protect itself. Reinstall the cooler properly.

is there a recommended thermal paste? regular one fine?
  6. Yeah they're all fine.

    thanks so much man.
  8. Arctic Cooling MX 4 is great stuff and pretty cheap. No break in period like with AC 5.

got an antec formula 7 diamond thermal paste, applied correctly and same results

paste didn't work bro. same results
  11. Same result meaning what exactly.

meaning choppy HD videos. choppy cutscenes in games. Things dont seem to render properly. Computer freezes when more than 10 tabs opening. just gets slow
  13. Can you download HWMonitor and check your temps

You should not be allowed near computer hardware. Thermal paste isn't even close to looking like dirt. What made you even think dirt could work its way between a cpu heatspreader and a heatsink? Air can't even get between between the two after the heatsink is latched.
