This drive was once installed as the boot drive but I later replaced it with a 840EVO 1 TB drive. I had foolishly simply cloned the two drives making the TB drive the boot drive. Foolish in that I was having some problems in Windows and I hadn't followed my own advice which would have been to do a clean install. Long story short I took the TB drive and installed in another computer to do a safe erase with SS Magician. Went well after the first frozen message. Installed and all is well.

Now the 500GB drive wouldn't do a secure erase at all. 10-15% and frozen message would appear. Maybe got as far as 40% once but then Magician could no longer recognize the drive at all. Disk Management indicated the drive needed to be initialized which was surprising since it never fully erased. Tried to initialize and get the message "Data error (cyclic redundancy check)".

I have no idea what to do next short of calling Samsung Support Monday. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Steve

After calling Samsung I was told that the drive was password protected. He indicated this happens sometimes and that it wasn't anything I did. I haven't ever password protected any hardware at a bios level. Other than passwords for program access, nadda. So I'm waiting on the UPS Next Day labels to arrive and get them returned. Yes, them, my 1TB drive is in the same shape. I should have burned the DOS bootable Secure Erase and use that after the second failure. SSDs are great but evidently very touchy animals.

Hopefully the drives will return soon for a full fresh install carefully done with eyes wide open.
