Hey Guys,

First time posting here so this would be a long post. I'm thinking to build an extreme gaming system compared to my previous one. This time, however, I'm not sure if some of the parts are overkill/ not needed/ not worth etc. I would also appreciate if someone could help me with comparisons.

List:

CPU: 2 Options – The PC is mostly for gaming, but I would also be editing photos, video editing and streaming sometimes.

1. Intel Core i5 4690K – $325
2. Intel Core i7 4790K – $470

Mobo: ASUS Z97-A – $230

GPU: Gigabyte GTX 970 G1 4GB – $500 (Alternative option (GTX 980 - $800) for 1440P)

RAM: G.Skill Ares F3 DDR3 1866MHz 16GB (2X8GB) – $200

SSD: 4 Options – I think from what I have read it's worth getting the PCle.

1. Samsung XP941 256GB – $450
2. Plextor M6e M.2 256GB – $340
3. Samsung 850 PRO 512GB – $450
4. Samsung 850 EVO 500GB – $320

HDD: Seagate Barracuda 2TB – $110

PSU: SilverStone Strider Essential 700W Gold – $130

Cooling: Noctua NH-D14 – $100

Case: Corsair Graphics 780T Black – $260

OS: Microsoft Windows 7 64Bit OEM – $140

Total: AUD $2,600

Monitor Comparison: I currently have a 24" 1920X1200 60Hz Monitor and I plan on upgrading to a 1080P 144Hz or 1440P. Although I'm still not 100% sure.

2 options:

1. ASUS VG248QE 24" 1080P 144Hz – $460
2. ASUS PB278QR 27" 1440P – $650

Option 1 is definitely better for smoother experience + less screen tearing, but Option 2 provides better visuals. I could buy the ASUS ROG swift, but I don't want TN display. If anyone has experience with both I would love to hear their opinions.

ACER just launched 1440P IPS 144Hz, but it's not gonna be available until the end of this year.

Thanks

~ Michael

Issues with your proposed components:
1. Don't take the Strider Essentials (it's lower-tier).
2. Really not sure the PCIe storage is appropriate for your rig or that it can be maximally supported on Z97 motherboards.
3. Got you a better motherboard. Read the thread on motherboards here on Tom's.
4. Microsoft Home Premium *the version you priced) won't support more than 16GB of RAM - if you ever plan to increase your RAM (unlikely) then you will have to upgrade the OS.
5. Oh yea, stay away from the GTX970, It's has issues.

On all the components, if I had to build this I could save some $$$ that will ultimately add up to a fairly large beloved patriot, but I'm not sure how wedded you are to some of the components.
