I have my system set to shut the monitor off after 15min with windows 8.1. If I put music on through my hdmi port to my receiver or through my headphone port the music always shuts off when my monitor goes to sleep after 15min. How do I shut the monitor off without losing music in 8.1? This was not an issue in windows 7.

Solution
Use the analog outputs on the 3.5mm sound jacks. HDMI sound is controlled by the GPU and if it goes to sleep, so does your music. As far as I know, there is no way around this except to use a sound output that is not HDMI.

The other possibility is that your hard drive is also set to sleep after fifteen minutes. Check your power profile in control panel to determine that the hard drive is not set to sleep after 15 min. like the monitor. I'm unconvinced about it not doing it in 7 but doing it in 8 as the HDMI standard has been the same for some time but maybe newer HDMI standards have separate function capability for display and sound, unlike or other than older HDMI standards did. It's probably a good idea to double check the individual...

It's probably a good idea to double check the individual advanced power settings in control panel. There might be something there that's related. I'd also make sure I had the latest audio and display drivers installed.

So the HDMI is probably shutting off with the monitor but HDMI audio is way better than even optical. I guess I will just use the monitor power off built into my monitor and turn off this setting in windows. I could swear that my old hdmi video card, Nvidia with windows 7 and a different board still allowed audio through the hdmi port when the monitor was off. I did upgrade everything recently so maybe I should ask Nvidia.
