No real maximum, depends on the controller and other practical considerations.

Also, if your array has too many disks, your chances of a non-recoverable read error occurring during the array rebuild after a loss of a drive or two (depending on the RAID level) becomes extremely high. Disk size and quality are important in this case.

If you want larger arrays consider raidz2 or raidz3 using FreeNAS.
