Last week, Windows 8 updated and wanted a restart. I restarted the computer and one of my externals was suddenly 'Local Disk H'. If I try clicking on it or accessing it from computer management, it freezes up. I read that virtual drives can cause issues, so I unmounted my virtual drives and it appeared as normal. I was playing a file on it and about 1 hour into it, it froze up and started doing the same thing again. I've tried uninstalling the device through device manager, but my computer never leaves the 'restarting' screen and if I restart manually, my computer won't load past the desktop pic until I unplug the drive. I tried the drive with a different power cord, different USB cord and 2 other computers and had the same result each time.

The drive has lots of data on it that I need to recover, but I'm not sure what else I can do.

Hi there mightysparks,

Sorry that you are facing some issues with your WD external drive. :(
You can try accessing the drive with some data recovery software. Check this thread out: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/id-1644496/lost-data-recovery.html
After that, you can test the drive with WD's Data Lifeguard Diagnostic tool. The results will eventually show what is wrong with the drive.
If you can't access the drive with these software tools though, and your WD model is not a hardware encrypted one(WD Elements), you can consider taking the drive out of the enclosure and connecting it internally through SATA. If the drive model is hardware encrypted one(WD My Book, WD My Passport, etc.) though, I would say that you should contact a data recovery company in order to retrieve your data. You can check WD's Data Recovery Partners out: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=BU0Q2M

WD's DLG tool: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=cm6dAN

Hope any of this will help,
D_Know_WD :)

Recuva wouldn't run with the drive plugged in, so I unplugged it, opened it and plugged it back in and it said it couldn't open drive. Likewise, the diagnostic tool would freeze up as soon as the drive was plugged in.
