i have read in a lot places that for current gaming pcs you don't require more than an ordinary i7 or i5 no fancy stuff like an octa core i7 cuz it wont make any difference . but with the release of directx12 which promises to use all the cores of the processor contrary to directx11. so should i be getting an 6 core or 8 core processor with directx12

DirectX 12 will improve performance on quad core CPUs as well.
The per-core performance of an Intel quad core CPU is that much better than AMD that they come out ahead in most situations.
You don't need 6 cores, but if you wanted it the only real step up from a Core i7 4790K are the Haswell-E CPUs Core i7 5820K, 5930K or 5960X.
These require a more expensive motherboard and the CPUs are more expensive. They are no better in any current game with up to two graphics cards, so this is a large extra cost for something that may or may not improve performance in the future.
