Following on the previous post, here's another way to test for a faulty front switch. Look closely at the bo0ttom right (front) corner of the mobo where the System Front Panel port is, with several wires going to the front panel. Find the two adjacent pins on it (often near middle bottom of it) labeled Power Switch. The front panel switch is just a momentary-on pushbutton, like a doorbell button. To get the system to turn on (normally) all it does is short the two Power Switch connections together for a second or so when you push the button and release it. You can duplicate that at the mobo connector. Take as short piece of wire (even a paperclip) and momentarily connect the two Power switch pins. If the system is working (except for the switch) it will turn on and boot.

If it works this way, check what Phillip Corcoran said: either the switch itself is faulty or the wiring connection to it is. The switch is a simple pushbutton, so anything similar will replace it. In fact, there is another front panel button that works the same was - the Reset button. If you unplug the Power Switch at that mobo connector and then move over to those pins the connector from the Reset Switch, that front panel switch becomes your On / Off button, at least temporarily, until you can replace it. (That's even another way to conduct the test above, without using a wire.)
