i7-4790k 100°C on stock cooler and stock settings when under full load

As the the title says, my i7-4790k is running a bit hot. I'm using stock settings along with the stock cooler that came in the box. I ran prime 95 and Intel burn test which both got my CPU to a 100°C. I realize that these tests are supposed to simulate an extreme scenario but I've also experienced high temps when running games. I'm an avid player of Civilization 5, while playing the game I noticed that my CPU temperatures were hovering around 84-85°C when playing the game. Is this normal for this CPU and cooler? Is there any way I could lower the heat output by messing around with the settings in the bios?

i'm no expert but the answer to your question has been repeated on this forum, probably 10-12 times daily, as that's how often the same question re the i7-4790K cpu overheating gets asked

you might try just scrolling down the page and reading the answers already posted numerous times - not trying to be smart, just to clue you why this question might not get attention

having the same problem to fix this make sure your ram in bios is set to 1333hz anything over this it will make the i7 run hotter.2 there is a setting in bios for turbo mode it over clocks the i7 automatically. if you have anything overclock it makes Ur CPU get alot hotter also download Ur gambling settings and get a liquid cooler asap

i was runing my ram at 2133hz and my cpu was runing at 99c with intil diagnostic tool as soon as i downloaded it to 1333 it ran 9c cooler and when gameing it ran6-7c cooler

My motherboard is the ASRock z87 extreme3, I'm also running 16 gigs of RAM @ 1866. I had to disable one of the cores to have acceptable temperatures until I get a better cooler. I talked to a friend that has the same CPU and he's also experiencing the same heat issues, but his PC is giving him frequent BSODs as well. I'll have a look at the memory settings, maybe that will change something. Right now the CPU is running at 74°C while under heavy load with only the 3 cores enabled. I'm also using the onboard graphics, so that might be partly contributing to the higher temperatures.
