How much power do I really need?

Hello all!

I was looking to upgrade my hardware but I was trying to figure out how much larger of a PSU I will need. I currently have a 1000w and it's hosting the following:

CPU: AMD FX-9590
Water Cooler: CORSAIR Hydro Series H100i
GPU: PowerColor AX7990 6GBD5-A2DHJ DEVIL13 - 850w
Keyboard: Razer Chroma
RAM: 2 DDR3 (both 8 GB)
Disk: 1 1TB HDD 7200 rpm / 1 SSD

I was looking to get the newest edition of the Devil 13 which is another dual core only now it's an R9 290X2 , which has a recommended 1000w minimum.

My thinking though, is that I'd like to actually use both of the GPUs. As the first one was pretty expensive at the time and I'd hate to miss out on that additional processing power. So right now I'm having a bit of trouble determining how much power I will actually need to run these cards in crossfire, if anyone could help that would be highly appreciated. :)

Solution
i'm not sure they will run in xfire but if they can you're looking at a HUGE power need. they are both 500w+ gpu's, plus your 200w+ cpu. i'd say nothing less than 1600w would be needed to run that set-up. this will ensure the necessary 12v amps is there to run it all.

the evga g2 1600w comes to mind

Solution
PowerColor Devil 13 Dual Core R9 290X 8GB GDDR5 [AXR9 290X II 8GBD5]
Tom's Hardware measured a maximum of 419.8 Watts (i.e. for the graphics card itself) during their review of that card.

Powercolor HD 7990 Devil 13 6 GB [AX7990 6GBD5-A2DHJ]
techPowerUp.com measured a maximum of 551 Watts (i.e. for the graphics card itself) during their review of this card.

Power supply calculators use power consumption values based on Reference Design graphics cards. These Powercolor Devil 13 cards are non-reference design cards so the power supply calculators may grossly underestimate the actual power consumption.

that is why i suggested the 1600w evga. roughly 1000w for the gpu's, 225+ for the cpu and another 75w or so for the "other" needs. that's a lot of 12v amps!!!

~108 amps to be exact. to stay in the safe usage range, you'll want about 135 amps available. the evga has 133 available amps, keeping a full load in the "safe" usage range. a 1500w psu will be pushing it a bit, though the corsair ax1500 might be able to pull it off sine it is such an awesome psu capable of more than it is rated at. but it is 2x the price of the evga for a "might do it" recommendation.

You think 1600w would let me do xfire with the two cards (it is supported :])? I have the Rosewill HERCULES-1600 - 1600-Watt Modular, Active PFC Power Supply in my shopping cart on Newegg right now but I was worried that it wouldn't be enough to feed the beast. The product description pages made it seem like they needed so much more power.

I have a 1000w for my current setup not including the even more power hungry devil 13. I don't think 850w would get me where I need to go specially if I wanted xfire. :s But thank you for the response.

the evga g2 is $10 more after a $30 rebate ($309 up front) and a MUCH better psu. the rosewill is only an average psu and not really designed for the loads you will be asking of it. an extreme overclock of the fx cpu and 2 high power gpu's is just too much to ask of that psu.

the evga is a better choice by far. :)

Consider it done. Thank you for your time and swift responses :D Hopefully it will be enough to get everything running at once. While I have you I don't suppose you could also recommend a good UPS that will support my rig? I know very little about which brands to buy from and it seems most of the UPS's in my required range are super expensive.

Did you read? I said "Minimum" that means anything higher is better...
