would like to upgrade my 4 yr old computer, need help. I have an asus cm 1730-03, which needs a new hardrive.

I would like to also replace processor to quad or 6 and install windows 8. What parts are recommended and how to do the job. I am new to computers. Please help. I would like for the computer to run faster. I have a budget of 250.00. Also do I need another power unit.

Could we have a bit more information on the computer? a quick google gives me this: http://www.asus.com/Desktops/Essentio_CM1730/
but may not be exact. what processor, and if possible, what chipset do you have?

In terms of HDD any SATA hard drive will be compatible, just look on scan.co.uk or newegg.com is you are in the US.

Do you really need to upgrade to windows 8? can you not wait a few months for windows 10 to arrive so that you can upgrade for free?

Your motherboard is socket AM3, so is pin-compatible with AMD phenom II and Athlon II processors. The best CPU upgrade you can get realistically is something along the lines of a phenom II 940 x4, but any performance in everyday computing will be very little.

I would recommend saving up a bit and getting an intel socket 1150 and a cheaper i5 (i5 4460 is good), but this would cost a bit more and you would have to buy a new copy of windows.
