I think it is cheap as heck Dell will not give me a copy even though I have a key, but Dell will not as it is past warranty, Microsoft will not let me download as the copy of windows is OEM. So I am a pickle of how to get a copy save paying $100 for something I already own. Any Ideas?

If you have the original key, you can d/l from here:

[strike]http://msft.digitalrivercontent.net/win/X17-58997.iso[/strike]
<Mod Note: That link has been permanently disabled by Microsoft>

and burn to a blank disk. You'll have to do everything manually: enter the key, d/l and install all drivers (go to the support section at Dell.com, type in your service tag and select the drivers for Win 7 x64) and all your programs and other stuff. Dell utilities not available on the support site you can't get back.

At least for me, that page gives a 404 error. You could try this to get the .iso properly:

That DigitalRiver link does not work anymore. That went away a couple months ago...:(

Your options:

1. Purchase a new OS install. 7, 8.1, whatever.
2. Purchase the Factory Reset DVD set from Dell.
3. Invent a time machine. Go back in time to when you first purchased the Dell. Create the Factory Reset DVD set from whatever function was on there. Fast forward to today, and go find those DVDs.

This being an OEM install from Dell, that link will cough up an error when he enters the OEM license key.

What is causing you to do a reinstall?

since the DVD doesn't contain the key, then isn't option 4 "borrow a W7HP DVD from someone and install using the key that's on your Dell"? isn't the value/price in the key and not the disk itself?

This all depends on 'why'. If a toasted hard drive, then the license key can't be found.
Which is why I asked....

For forgetting option 4. Find the install media from another source. Any windows 7 disk for your edition will do. You can get one from a friend, a shop, or an alternate source on the internet. You just have be sure that it's an unaltered copy. That's the tricky part.

The copy is 100% legit, it came with the machine and is on the back of it here... sadly Dell does not give you a disk... they want you to make a system recovery disk. I forgot to do that... this thing takes a few mins to load internet explorer... I know it is an I 3 ultrabook, but it is not that slow.

Pint I know that would work, but the problem is I do not care to pay $100 for a disk and i need an ISO for a disk or another copy of one. I have done this for my brothers dell... you have to find the drivers, i have my drivers and applications discs... jsut not the windows disc. as said before even the key is not an issue.

These are Dell laptops, so the license is on the computer itself....

Shiz that option will not work... microsoft says I cannot download from them as it is OEM... they want me to get it from DELL... About the only option is find an ISO somwhere else or find a friend who has one.

as to what happened, it is running slow as heck, i think it needs a wipe. Like I said before I have a key on the back of the laptop itself, but no disc. This is the last dell I will buy, of course I build my own desktops so I will actually have a windows DVD.. sadly my desktop, had Windows 7 Professional 64 bit and this has a cheapo version.

As to why, like i said I do not havea disc, but unlike stand alone copies of windows where the copy is on the box, this computer has it on the back of it's case. I do not know where the disc is, I do not belive I eer got one as I still have the drivers and applications discs.

Dell will not send a replacement as it is past warranty, Microsoft at the download site will not let me download because the copy is OEM.

If you can still boot into it, look for a "Dell Backup and Restore" Utility - that has the option to use the built-in recovery tool.

oh for cryin' out loud. the WHY doesn't matter. he has the OEM key label that's somewhere on the underside of the machine or inside the battery bay. heck, MY dell didn't come with a disk and when i wanted to swap from HDD to SSD, i just grabbed another Win7 dvd from two years ago and used the Dell key to install it. NO BIG DEAL.

why in the heck is everyone here giving this guy the 3rd degree? just download it from some P2P. you have the key, that's the important part.

The 'why' DOES matter.
If the drive is still functional, simply create the Dell factory reset disk set.
If the drive is NOT still functional....then other methods need to be investigated.

I agree. Both questions matter. Maybe the issue can be repaired without a reinstall. That should probably be explored. Its also a good idea to have the disk, in the event it does need a reinstall, now or in the future.

falcon the drive IS functional and is riddled with viruses, also the backup is from a month ago when the problems started well over a year ago. Considering the Dell / Microsoft situation where I cannot get a disc for something I own, I am just going to install linux.... hopefully I can find a build that at least has drivers for the thing. I will never buy a Dell laptop again...

I heard anyone who has windows 7 and above can trade their copy for a free one of 10, I just did not know it was an option yet, I guess at this point I am gonna try that or Ubuntu Ultimate...

if they do not allow us to keep the windows 10 or make it registered i will jsut make the machine Ubuntu. It is my laptop i rarly use, but when i am out of town like now I could use it.
