I have a 1tb WD MY Passport hard drive. Recently it turned slow. It takes a lot of time event detecting it. After detected, navigation becomes not responding after few clicks.
All my data is there in the drive, so that is not the issue. But I am unable to copy paste data as it turns not responding after few clicks.
Pls help me how can I get my data back.

My lapy is running on win 7 OS.

I have tried different PC and also, tried after formatting mine, but the problem still persists.

I have heard that change of cable may do the trick, is it worth a shot?

Hi again, Milan!

I'm glad to hear about that! Looks like you will be able to get your replacement after all! :)
As for the whole RMA turn-around time and shipping information, I believe this link from our website will shed some light: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=5lsamq
You also have the option for an online tracking tool that will allow you to check the real-time shipment progress yourself.

Hope I was able to help out! Best of luck!

Welcome to Tom's Hardware, Milan!

I'm very sorry to hear about your WD My Passport drive! :(
The clicking sound is definitely not a good sign at all. It indicates that there is most probably some sort of physical damage.
I strongly recommend saving the data from the drive, while you still have access to it and test it using WD's Data LifeGuard diagnostics tool.
Here's a link to the utility: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=kIVxA8
Make sure you run the QUICK & the EXTENDED test from the tool. It will let us know what is the health & S.M.A.R.T. status of the drive.
You can try with a different cable as well, but as I said, if the clicking noise is persistent the damage is on the HDD itself.
I'd also recommend you to check the warranty of your WD Passport as well: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=C4GAcr

Keep me posted with the results.

Hi,
Thanks a bunch for such prompt reply.
I will do the diagnostic test and let you know the results.

Meanwhile,
There is some confusion, there is no clicking sound from hard drive, what I meant to say was that it becomes not responding after a while, while am clicking through different folders on the drive.

Oh, I see! Well, still, the unresponsiveness is a not typical behavior for the WD Passport and it might be due to a corruption or damage of some sort. Test it and let me know what the results show.
Meanwhile, you can try a different USB cable if you have one lying around somewhere.

Stay in touch! :)

Hi,

I installed the lifeguard utility. First time, the drive was detected and smart status on the utility homepage said: not available. In properties, health stats read: warning. Then I ran the extended test, but it was taking too long, so I had to cancel it.

I unplugged the drive and plugged it again to do the quick test, but then the drive stopped getting detected in the utility.

I should also mention that as soon as I plug the drive into PC, safely remove icon pops up in the bottom bar, although it takes long for the drive to appear on my computer page.

I will try again to run the complete tests if it works.

Pls tell me that it can be fixed.

Hi again, Milan!

Unfortunately, it seems like the drive is going to fail soon. I'd suggest to try using a different cable or a different USB port on your computer. I hope you have backups of the data on the drive.
You shouldn't have canceled the extended test though, usually the bigger the capacity - the long it takes for the test to complete.
However, I can't say that we will be able to fix this drive.
I'd suggest to check your warranty here: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=pKjiAG
If the WD My Passport is still within the warranty period, you'd better call our tech support and send out an RMA request to get a replacement.
Here are their contacts: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=OoFG5l
How to RMA your product: http://products.wdc.com/support/kb.ashx?id=5akYcy

Keep me posted though & Good luck!

Hey there,

Sorry for a little late reply.

Thank god, the drive is in warranty till 6/29/2016.

Though, I will have to get the back up.

Thank you very much for your help.

One last thing, can you tell me approximately how long does this replacement process takes?
